Blas de Lezo y Olavarrieta was a Spanish admiral best known for his leadership during the War of the Spanish Succession and the War of Jenkins' Ear. He was born on February 3, 1689, in Pasajes, Spain.
De Lezo lost his left eye, left leg, and left hand in various naval battles, yet he continued to serve in the Spanish Navy with distinction. He is best remembered for his heroic defense of Cartagena de Indias in modern-day Colombia in 1741, where his small and poorly equipped forces defeated a much larger British fleet under Admiral Edward Vernon.
During the Battle of Cartagena de Indias, de Lezo's strategic brilliance and resourcefulness were crucial in repelling the British invasion and securing a decisive victory for the Spanish. Despite being heavily outnumbered and facing overwhelming odds, de Lezo's tactical genius and indomitable spirit earned him a place in history as one of Spain's greatest naval heroes.
Blas de Lezo died on September 7, 1741, from wounds sustained during the battle. Today, he is regarded as a national hero in Spain and his legacy is honored for his bravery, leadership, and unwavering dedication to his country.
